Hey guys! Different post here, but as I was sitting at SBA waiting for my 26 hour delayed flight before Christmas (no joke!) with one gift shop and restaurant, I started brainstorming and making a list of my travel essentials and simple travel tips for the future… so I just thought I would share! I am no world traveller, but after 22 planes and 7 roadtrips in 2014, I am so thankful I have gotten faster at packing, and created a system to know exactly what I need, even in the event of the unexpected (hello delays!).
1. Put an empty water bottle in your carry on to fill once you are through security. Low on packing space? Ask Starbucks for an ice water too when you order your coffee. It is so easy to get dehydrated… but also to spend $$ just on water.
2. Keep a couple protein bars or healthy snacks in your bag just in case. Food is usually available in airports, but when you have a two hour delay stuck ON THE PLANE (or in traffic), your stomach will thank you!
3. Ask the front desk or flight attendants on the plane if there are other available seats. A lot of airlines now charge for the first 10 economy rows, so it doesn’t hurt to ask… especially if you are flying solo! (hello exit row!)
4. If you are flying in pairs, book the isle+window seat. There is less of a chance someone will select the middle seat, but if it’s full and they do, I’m sure they would gladly switch! If not, more space!
5. Check out sites like Expedia or Google Flights first to see what your options are. Google Flights is awesome because it if you are flexible with travel times+dates, it shows other local airport options and cheaper travel dates if you are looking to save some $$. BUT…
6. …. Book flights through the airline. Expedia or Google Flights are great ways to see all the available options, but it actually usually works out cheaper (most of the time) to book it directly, plus you get member miles for free just for booking with them.
7. Pack a pair socks so you can kick your shoes off and get cozy especially on those longer flights/drives!
8. Wear layers! The temperature can change quite a bit, especially depending on the climate of where you are flying to/layover is at. Plus, it is an easy way to avoid using those overhead airplane AC fans that keep circulating (hello flu season!).
9. Keep all your documents handy as you will need them at multiple checkpoints… but have a backup! I always keep a photocopy of all essential documents, ID, and credit cards in another pocket or carry on, just in case something gets misplaced or stolen.
10. Be flexible. Things happen. Flights get delayed. Line ups take longer than expected. Just be prepared, expect the unexpected, get comfortable, and enjoy the ride!
