Cherry Blossoms are out, flowers are starting to bloom, and the sun is a shining. Hello engagement session season. I love shooting engagement sessions. They are such a fun and simple way to celebrate your relationship before you become husband and wife. Now, I send out a word document of helpful tips as to what to wear+bring to your engagement session, but one question I have been getting asked is how do we plan our engagement session??
With engagement sessions and ”styled shoots” becoming more and more popular, there are many things to think about. Yes, the location has a huge impact in the over all ”feel” or ”theme” of your session, but it is so much more than that. Finding a location for your engagement photos is more than just picking that spot that ”looks cool” or going for that style is totally ”in” right now. It is about who you are, what you love, and who you are becoming as husband and wife. It is about going to that spot, or doing that activity that one day your kids will look back on and think ”that is SOOO mom+dad”.
So… Here are a few questions to ask yourself to help you plan your engagement session and find a location that is SOOO you.
1. What do you do on Saturday? You both have the day off. Think back to when you were dating and didn’t have a wedding to plan. What did you do/where did you go??
2. What is your history as a couple? Did you meet in Starbucks? Was your first date snowshoeing at the local mountain? Or maybe was it a long distance relationship for a while so you wrote letters? Re-create those moments or go back to that place now and celebrate as a soon-to-be-married couple. Start the shoot over a cup of coffee. Go for a romantic hike snowshoeing, or plan a styled shoot writing letters to each other lying on a blanket in a field.
3. What are your hobbies/interests? What do you love as individuals or as a couple? Engagement sessions are a great way to showcase your differences, or highlight those activities that brought you together.
Hope this helps! Remember, engagement sessions are supposed to be FUN and capture YOU. There is no such thing as a bad idea. Enjoy! :)
